Re: Apply Some Pressure
Looking ahead as if something was broken is a great way to frame our thinking.

One of our leaders always quotes Ray Croc of McDonald's fame, "If you're green your growing. If you're ripe, you rot." The "If it ain't broke..." philosophy is like that ripe tomato that isn't growing and improving. It's sitting there going bad. If you aren't improving, your competitors will be leave you behind.

Apply Some Pressure
I like the way Stanford University marketing professor Baba Shiv looks at innovation: Companies need to instill in their people a subtle sense of desperation so that they don't get too complacent. Especially when times are good and things are humming along, the tendency is to not mess with success. Shiv recommends doing a "pre-mortem" exercise: Look ahead three to five years and assume that the business or some foundational IT project has failed. It forces organizations to face potential threats and address opportunities now, not only when there's a crisis.
