All in the family
First of all, I want to note that Cloudscaling, IBM and Rackspace are all committed to OpenStack, the open source cloud software project. Rackspace was an originator and one of the first OpenStack implementers. In that sense, the opinions on use of the word "open" expressed here are differences within the "family," if you will, and reflect family tensions. In my opinion, the major differences in openness lie between the OpenStack supporters as a group and Amazon Web Services, or even OpenStack and Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform. And IMHO, no one has got a perfect argument that they're open and the others are not.
