Falling all over themselves to give away software
This is an old tactic -- giving away sofware hoping to get the youngters hooked on their tools. SAS and IBM have been giving away their software, but they can't make the rounds to every college and university. That's why open source products and tools based on R that are freely downloadable have gained huge traction in universities. Nobody has to ask what's available or who had copies of the software or the license keys. Professors, teaching assistants and students alike just go and download it and get started.
