This: "We know who's paying the bills, but we make sure the customer is happy to write that check."

To me that gets right to the crux of the matter. If business leaders don't go around telling peers how great their IT teams are in much the way they might brag about how their kids get all A's and their dogs are of above-average intelligence, you as a CIO have a problem.

As for the motivators, where "you find opportunities to get people fired up," I think the last one on the author's list is the most important one: growth. Without consistent growth, the work itself becomes less interesting and things like achievement and promotions become so much harder.

Finding our place
Thank you for the article, Michael!  Ya know, entrepreneurship happens everyday, in every workplace.  People may not realize it, but everytime a person makes their job easier by applying new methods or insights, they have practiced entrepreneurship.  For traditional salary positions, this value-added dimension is applied to the employer, and not necessarily the employee.  When entrepreneurs venture on their own, all value-added dimensions are owned by the entrepreneur.  So, in the end, it's a matter of reaping benefits for your creative work, or let someone else reap the benefit.  It's a simple as that.  I'm not saying that either is right for all individuals, just that the dynamics are there.
