I would stronly recommend a 450 watt Power Inverter that can plug into the car Cigarette lighter and power nearly any of the basic electronic devices. It is simple and does not require as much knowledge for the user as a generator. Just make sure vehicle is run outside and not in the garage so CO2 is not an issue (same problem would arise with generator). Add an extra Car battery and a car battery trickle charger (or better yet, small solar panel) to keep the batter charged and you have juice for a number of days that can run the inverter for lights and other small functions.
Generator is not a bad idea of people know what they are doing.
