MS has lost it's way and risks going the way of the dinosaurs
It's long past time for MS to step up to the plate and admit they blew it with Win 8. I can remember Tami Reller (Exec VP under Ballmer) absolutely lying about the growing acceptance of Win 8 and saying "the touchscreen is the future". Well, Win 8 was certainly designed with such in mind and it showcased MS's late entry into the smart phone and tablet markets. However, MS totally missed the larger business community, professionals, power users and gamers. In these arenas, the touch screen is simply a nonstarter and Win 8 brings nothing to the table. If you look around, Win 7 Pro and Enterprise dominate the Windows market. Combined with XP, you're now looking at some 77-80% of all Windows operating computers. This translates into Win 8 not gaining traction. Win 8.1 is nothing but lip service and will not sell any better. I would go as far as to say that the decline in computer sales can be partially correlated to Win 8 being preinstalled instead of giving the consumer a choice. However, the PC's are here to stay (incl laptops) so is the keyboard and mouse.

Now MS wants people to buy into the "cloud" with their Office 365. They will get some success for a while, but this, like the touchscreen, is not the future. The cloud is nothing more than a regression to the old "time share" days which ended for very good reasons. In the end, this is all about generating more/new revenue streams with little value added for the consumer. I would offer that my laptop is truely a stand-a-lone mobile computing device. Besides the enormous horse power, I do not need to be connected 24/7 to get the work done or even entertain myself. Everything is local.

I would hope MS gets back on track with Win 9 and realizes that one size doesn't fit all. Phones and tablets are niche devices, especially the tablets, and many of us are not screen zombies and actually have to produce in order to get paid.
