It's all about the details
It's funny that no matter the connectivity involved, if the app isn't functional, the actual app provider is on the hook.  In the case of Whatsapp, working with a moving target (mobile connectivity) it makes perfect sense that they stuck to a more stable transmission protocol (SMS) in order to minimize break points and avoid getting over-friendly when it comes to functionality and trying to be everything to everyone.  A great reminder that sometimes doing something very simply and effectively is better than trying to do everything and doing none of it particularly well.
