DR in the cloud will be the norm, not exception
Good analysis, Kurt, and I agree with your recommended, how to get started list. The day is not far off when not having DR in the cloud will be as damning as not having firewalls in the data center. The cloud offers not only a reasonably low cost DR process but an alternative site strategy, rolled into one. Should be a no-brainer.

Don't forget the network...
Great article on how cloud DR is going to be a critical service moving forward.  To add to this, the real complication will come from network recovery.  Right now I am not surprised to see such a high number of users backup to tape, since it's cost-effective and relatively quick.  The problem with cloud DR is that if you need to backup from a cloud site, the network usage is the real wild card.  On one hand, the amount of data that might be affected could mean a huge network bill if you are consistently replicating and need to do a backup.  A lot of service providers forget to mention this little detail.  a few terabytes could be not just a nightmare from a cost perspective, but the time it would take could be the lead contributor to your downtime.  The other option is to look at DR providers who leverage WAN optimization to help streamline the process and prioritize packets in order to make these services more nimble, since the faster you can regain your data, the less damage the outage will do to your organization.
