Wearable medical technology is becoming a hot commodity. As these devices come to market, they have the potential to help both patients and clinicians monitor vital signs and symptoms.

AiQ develops "smart textiles" for a range of custom apparel, including a vital sign monitoring system in a t-shirt. The BioMan t-shirt has ribbed "smart sleeves" that measure the user's heart rate, respiration rate and skin temperature. The garment can be further customized to measure skin moisture and electrophysiological signals such as EKG, electroencephalography (EEG), or electromyography (EMG). AiQ sells other specialized "smart" jackets and vests. For instance, the SolarMan vest has built-in solar panels capable of recharging the user's electronic devices. The CameraMan jacket has a built-in HD camera in the left breast pocket area, and the ArmorMan pullover has padding that stiffens on contact to protect the wearer.

I work for a company called ICEdot. We created a wearable, helmet-mounted crash sensor that detects severe impacts and notifies your emergency contacts via SMS, email or phone call. We're running an Indiegogo campaign right now to help cover the costs of sensor production. Check it out at http://www.indiegogo.com/icedo...

It's exciting to see new products being launched in the market for monitoring and early detection. Wearable medical devices will only help us gain faster insight to conditions as they arise and lead to better medicine. It'll be nice to see how this progresses as circuits become smaller and devices become cheaper/more available to the masses.

It seems to me that devices like the Metria sensor can go a long way in prevention of many illnesses. I can imagine a physician maintaining a database of info sent by his or her patients from the Metria device to look for patterns or symptoms to make better diagnoses and improve treatment.

What we need to know is what hubs will work with the devices. The hub will transmit the info to the doctor/hospital and there is no real "standard" yet for sending & receiving the data. In some cases you buy a hub with the wearable device. We should only need one hub but until the standards are established it is going to get messy.
