BT said it is developing a software-based VoIP app for the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP). The new app will let users to make voice and video calls over a Wi-Fi network. Will VoIP be the newest add-on for mobile game handhelds? Here is a look at the BT's upcoming PSP VoIP system:

The PSP comes built-in with a Wi-Fi adapter. Video calls will require the use of an add-on camera.

BT will roll-out the service in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania with the support of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd., Sony's gaming division responsible for PlayStation products in territories that use the PAL television color system.

Don't look for PSP VoIP in the U.S. anytime soon. BT, not Sony, is the primary driver of this new application.

BT has been experimenting with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless VoIP systems for a while. BT was one of the first carriers to experiment with fixed-mobile convergence through its Project Bluephone initiative.

In the U.S., Sony is experimenting with a promotion that lets users play games online and surf the Web via T-Mobile USA's nationwide Wi-Fi hotspot network.

Do you think that mobile game devices like the PSP will become mobile VoIP devices?
