Sony Optiarc America's half-height internal Blu-ray Disc rewritable drives, which target the computer aftermarket, replace standard DVD drives while offering the benefits of Blu-ray Disc technology, such as 3D high-definition playback, the company said. Single BD-R media can be written up to 12X with the new drives, and dual-layer BD-R media up to 8X speeds, taking about 10 minutes to record a full 25GB disc. The 12X recording speed is reached with 6X compatible BD-R media, according to Sony. As much as 50GB of data can be recorded on the new drives.
