For almost one year, Apple has owned the tablet market. In fact, it's had the market almost entirely to itself. That began changing at the end of last year, with a constant stream of announcements and product launches from Cisco, Research In Motion, Samsung, and more, leading to an absolute avalanche of new products announced and demonstrated at CES this January. Let's go over some of the basics. iPad 2 will ship March 11 in the U.S., 26 more countries by March 25. It features the same 10-hour battery life as the original iPad, and more than one month of standby. iPad 2 will ship in both black and white from day one, which drew big applause. Service from both AT&T and Verizon on day one as well--no applause (or surprise) there. Some 65,000 iPad apps have already been developed.
What doesn't iPad 2 have? We wish it had an SD card slot, USB connectivity. HDMI out is good, but as always, it's everything OUT, and absolutely nothing IN. We wish there was a way to hard wire it to the network, even through USB. Jobs calls these "post-PC devices," which must be easier to use and more intuitive than the PC, and the applications must intertwine and be more seamless than PC apps are today. That is both self-serving and correct.
