Will the iPhone 5 have near-field communications (NFC) technology, the fledgling feature that enables wireless purchases and data transfers? We probably won't know for sure until September 12th. NFC has been a rumored iPhone 5 feature for months now, but the new handset's new casing (more on this later) is raising doubts that the new handset will have the feature. AnandTech, for instance, recently posted a detailed technical explanation as to why the iPhone's new metal back would make things highly problematic for an NFC antenna, resulting in poor performance. Given NFC's nascent nature, it wouldn't be a shocker if Apple decides to wait until next year to add it.
