Tablet Buying Demystified: 10 Tips
Samsung believes that consumers like to have choice when it comes to screen sizes. The company sells devices with screens that range from 2.6 inches all the way up to 13.3 inches. The latest devices, part of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3 series, include screens measuring 7, 8, and 10.1 inches.
First, let's shed some light on Samsung's naming conventions. Samsung offers two lines of tablets: the Galaxy Tab series and the Galaxy Note series. The Tab series are lower-cost devices aimed at consumers, while the Note series are more high-end, including S Pen styluses and offering more advanced software for business users. The new devices are the third generation of the low-cost consumer group.
All three devices share much of their software and many features. All three run the Jelly Bean version of Android and Samsung's TouchWiz user interface overlay. TouchWiz includes the accompanying Samsung services, such as Samsung Hub, ChatOn and Samsung Apps. All three come with IR blasters for controlling television sets and cable boxes, as well as Samsung's WatchOn software for sifting through video options. They are preloaded with what Samsung calls "perks." People who buy one of the new tablets will receive a $10 Google Play Store credit, one year of free Boingo hotspot access, three months of free Hulu Plus service, and two years of free DropBox service with 50GB of online storage.
Additionally, all three are Samsung For Enterprise (SAFE) certified, which means they support encryption, VPNs, and other business-friendly security features. Last, the larger two tablets come with Samsung's multi-window functionality, which lets users use two applications at the same time.
The Tab 3 7.0 includes a 1.2-GHz dual-core Marvell processor, while the Tab 3 8.0 sports a 1.5-GHz quad-core Exynos processor, and the Tab 3 10.1 has an Intel Z2560 1.6-GHz dual-core processor. The displays of the three devices rate 1024x600 for the Tab 3 7.0, and 1280 x 800 for both the Tab 3 8.0 and Tab 3 10.1. All three tablets are available in the U.S. with Wi-Fi only. There's no word if U.S. carriers will eventually offer versions with 3G/4G on board. All three devices have dual cameras for taking pictures and video chatting. They use a common design language, which means they are light, slim, light and obviously part of Samsung's Galaxy line of products.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, Tab 3 8.0, and Tab 3 7.0 will be available for preorder beginning June 25. They will be in stores, including Best Buy/Best Buy Mobile, Amazon, Wal-Mart, Office Depot, Toys 'R Us, P.C. Richard & Son, Fry's, Newegg, and Sears, on July 7. The tablets cost $399, $299, and $199, respectively. All three devices are already available internationally.
