Samsung on Sunday announced that it has shipped one million Android 2.1-powered Galaxy S phones in the U.S.
The Galaxy S series is being sold by just two carriers right now: AT&T and T-Mobile. The Galaxy S Captivate (AT&T) and Galaxy S Vibrant (T-Mobile) went on sale in mid July. Sprint and Verizon Wireless will begin selling their variants (Epic 4G and Fascinate, respectively) very soon, and U.S. Cellular and Cellular South will begin selling them later this fall.
Selling one million Galaxy S phones is a pretty big win for Samsung and Android in general. All four Galaxy S variants are compelling devices, especially with their four-inch AMOLED displays and 1GHz Hummingbird processors on board.
"Bringing Galaxy S devices to multiple carriers has given Samsung Mobile the opportunity to reach millions of consumers," said Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Mobile in a prepared statement. "I am proud of the instant success of the Galaxy S line up and I am very pleased to announce that because of the support of our carrier partners and loyal customers, we have shipped one million Galaxy S devices in the U.S. market. Samsung Mobile looks forward to sharing additional Galaxy S milestones in the future."
Samsung has a right to be proud. The company, while maintaining a solid footprint in the U.S., has played second fiddle to Motorola and HTC, which are both duking it out in the premium Android device segment. That Samsung has sold so many of these devices proves the demand for Android is high.
One has to wonder if the poor availability of devices such as the Motorola Droid X and HTC Droid Incredible has played any role in Samsung's success these last few weeks. Due to supply problems, the X and Incredible have been hard to come by.
All the Galaxy S phones will be updated to Android 2.2 later this year, though it will be up to each individual carrier to develop and distribute the upgraded software.
If you're in the market for a solid Android device, the Samsung Galaxy line is worth your consideration. Making it available across all the major U.S. carriers was the right choice for Samsung. Once it hits Sprint and Verizon store shelves, I'd expect a significant sales surge.
