NASA Curiosity Rover's Year On Mars: 5 Breakthroughs

Look at some of the Mars rover's achievements, as NASA celebrates Curiosity's first anniversary on the Red Planet.

On July 21, Curiosity drove twice as far as on any other day of the mission since landing on Mars. The trip was 109.7 yards, or 100.3 meters, long. NASA said the drive offered an "unusually good view for rover engineers to plan a safe path." In the weeks to follow, the Curiosity team at NASA will start using the autonav capability so that the rover can autonomously navigate a path for itself, making such long drives more common. Curiosity has worked in the Glenelg area for the first half of 2013. After drilling the second rock in Yellowknife Bay and completing a few nearby explorations, it's now headed toward the base of Mount Sharp, a three-mile mountain inside Gale Crater. There, Curiosity will search for clues to how Mars' environment has changed.

re: NASA Curiosity Rover's Year On Mars: 5 Breakthroughs
Why NASA didn't equip Curiosity with the sensors to make a definitive determination of whether or not there's life on Mars is beyond me. There Mars probes are like a cliffhanger that keeps withholding the payoff until the next season.
