Before we get to the details about Generation Y's thoughts on the mobile Web, Opera spells out what's shaking in the U.S. as far as mobile use is concerned.
Despite a 26.9% surge in unique users in October 2010 when compared to October 2009, Opera Mini users viewed 8.1% fewer web sites in the U.S. Page views came in at 175 per user. However, Opera Mini transferred 87.8% more data this year than last. The average amount of data consumed per user during the month was 9MB, with the average web site totaling 52Kb.
According to Opera's data, the top 10 mobile web sites in the U.S. for October 2010 were: Google, Facebook, YouTube, Wikipedia, Yahoo, My.Opera, Accuweather, ESPN, NYTimes, and MySpace.
On the handset side of things, Opera says the top 10 handsets using Opera Mini are: Apple iPhone, LG VM265 Rumor2, BlackBerry 9700 Bold, BlackBerry 8330 Curve, BlackBerry 8520 Curve, LG VM510 Rumor Touch, Samsung SPH-M810 Instinct S30, BlackBerry 9630 Tour, BlackBerry 8530 Curve, and the BlackBerry 9000 Bold.
In total, Opera Mini had 76.3 million usesr in October 2010, which is an increase of 7.1% over September 2010, and a 92% increase over October 2009. Opera Mini users viewed some 41.6 billion pages, an increase over October 2009 by a whopping 142%.
In October alone, Opera Mini users gobbled up 616 million megabytes of data, which, uncompressed, amounts to 5.7 petabytes.
On to the young folks. Opera polled its users to get an idea of how they are using their handsets. Here are some of the data points for U.S. users:
- 74% have browser the mobile web on public transit
- 30% have posted to their blog from their phone
- 90% have shared photos via picture messaging
- 44% have asked someone on a date via text message
- 15% have read an online newspaper via mobile "frequently"
- 15% have "never" read an online newspaper via mobile
- 56% have uploaded content to video-sharing sites
- 48% are "very comfortable" with the idea of purchasing goods online
- 70% have online friends they've never met in real life
- 51% of respondents in the U.S. use Opera Mini to access the web more than a desktop or laptop computer. (Most other countries have much higher percentages.)
"We have often said that the next generation will grow up knowing the Web mostly through their mobile phones," said Jon von Tetzchner, Co-founder, Opera. "We see this trend already emerging in different regions around the world. The mobile Web will bring a profound change in how we connect with one another. I think the results from this survey already show that change taking place."
