More Battery Capacity
There's another benefit to using in-cell touch panel technology: A bigger battery. By making the display and other components thinner, Apple and other smartphone builders are carving out room for a larger power supply. "We assume that in-cell touch could result in the display module being 0.5 mm thinner, which, combined with battery density of at least 600 Wh/l, would result in an increase in battery capacity of at least 40% in the iPhone 5," wrote NPD DisplaySearch's Lee. More juice is essential, of course, as the phone's larger display and quad-core CPU will require extra power.
