Mozilla Labs Links Desktop Firefox To Mobile Phones

A Firefox user will be able to send text, images, videos, RSS content, and Live Bookmarks to his or her phone.

Mozilla Labs on Wednesday released Joey, open-source software that transcodes Web content for display on mobile phones.

"Project Joey brings the Web content you need most to your mobile phone by allowing you to easily send it to your device," said project developer Doug Turner in a Mozilla Labs blog post. "You can quickly mark content that is important to you and have that content always available while using your mobile phone."

Joey consists of the Joey Server, a Firefox add-on, and a Java MIDlet (a small Java program for portable devices that run Java ME) for passing data from Firefox to a mobile phone.

The goal of the project is to improve the mobile browsing experience by reducing the amount of data sent to mobile phones and by dealing with formatting issues that arise when content designed for desktop browsing gets transferred to a small-screen device.

Using the Joey Server, a Firefox user, for example, will be able to send text, images, videos, RSS content, and Live Bookmarks to his or her phone. Asset management can be done through the phone's browser or the Joey application on the phone.

The software is still in its early stages but those who like to experiment with alpha code can set up an account and try it out.
