Personal Tech Guide

Your guide to what's hot, useful, and just plain fun

Perific's convertible mouse is wireless and USB-chargedMouse Magic
Perific's convertible mouse is wireless and USB-charged and features an adjustable horseshoe-shaped grip and track ball your hand can hold at any angle. With its shell in place, it's a traditional mouse. Remove the shell, and you gain a whole range of ergonomic flexibility. Use it and charge it simultaneously. The $169 mouse is compatible with Mac OS and Windows 98 or later.

Universal Memory Exchanger 36 by Cellebrite USAMobile Central
Does your mobile device change with your mood? Then the Universal Memory Exchanger 36 by Cellebrite USA may be just what you need. The $1,000 device lets you transfer your contacts, appointments, and images from one mobile device to another. It's compatible with most multimedia devices, including your BlackBerry, cell phone, Microsoft Mobile, Palm, PDA, and Symbian. The UME-36 runs Windows CE and features two USB and one Mini USB port, two serial connections, infrared interface, smart and SIM card readers, and an Ethernet/Internet port.

Black & Decker's $100 Storm StationWeather The Storm
Hurricane season starts on June 1. Is your backup charged and ready? A 25-watt inverter on Black & Decker's $100 Storm Station powers small home appliances, a 12-volt recharging port gives cell phones juice, and a weather band tuner picks up AM/FM/TV frequencies. A removable flashlight also is included, along with an emergency light. Instead of running on size D batteries, as do similar devices, the Storm Station's internal battery is charged by electricity and fully recharges overnight. A built-in locator light automatically turns on when the power goes off.

Motherboard Gifts
Beauty Within

Motherboard Gifts refashions the guts of computers, phones, and TVs into stylish accessories such as luggage tags, clocks, business card cases, and mouse pads. No two items are alike, thanks to varying colors and patterns--the "intrinsic beauty of technology," as the company describes it. Giving old circuit boards a second life, even as $95 sterling silver cuff links, also saves space in landfills.

AirPlay Network
Play Along

Coming soon to a cell phone near you: interactive TV! AirPlay Network has teamed with Sprint Wireless to provide customers with live, interactive television on their cell phones so they play along with live broadcasts of sporting events, reality programs, and game shows--but not quite yet. AirPlayTV debuts in the fall, along with its yet-to-be-announced subscription fee.

Plustek Portable Scanners
Scan Away

Portable scanners may not be new, but Plustek has made its latest version easy to carry and use. The $120 OpticSlim M12Plus isn't much bigger than a ruler and doesn't need a power cord, since it has a USB 1.1 connection. There are only two buttons--scan and custom--and no extra PDF software is needed. It handles three pages per minute with a resolution of 600 dpi.

TechTether
Fumble No More

The inspiration behind the TechTether was the repeated frustration of a ringing cell phone buried somewhere inside a handbag, not to be found until it had stopped ringing. The prototype was a strand of pearls tied to a purse and duct-taped to a phone. Now the strands are more sophisticated, with combinations of turquoise china crystals, cloisonné beads, pearls, Swarovski crystals, and tiger's-eye stones. More than 30 styles are available; prices vary from $20 to $100.
