Dell Launches Its First Semi-Rugged Notebook

The new Latitude ATG debuts in the U.S. but will be available overseas soon.

Looking to extend its reach outside the cubicle and home desktop, Dell has started selling its first notebook for customers working in tougher environments.

The new Latitude ATG D620 is listed as "semi-rugged," which means it's tough, but not unbreakable. The all-terrain grade computer meets military standards for vibration, humidity and altitude, and is designed to withstand bumps, moisture and other elements encountered by people working in the field.

Among the features are a shock-mounted hard drive, spill-resistant keyboard, port covers and high durability paint. The notebook is designed to withstand conditions commonly associated with military environments, construction sites, and police and emergency work.

The portable computer also includes a 14-inch LCD display that's one and a half times brighter than most mainstream corporate notebooks for better viewing in sunlight. The Latitude ATG is available in the United States. It'll be offered in other regions in the next couple weeks. Pricing starts at $2499.
