Garriques, who will report directly to Dell, is scheduled to take over as president of the global unit on Monday. He will be responsible for all of the company's consumer products, from desktop and notebooks to software and peripherals, as well as product design and sales.
The No. 1 PC maker is in the midst of a major shake-up that started when its chief executive Kevin Rollins quit in January and Dell returned as CEO to try to reverse the company's 18-month stretch of slowing sales and profits. Dell has been steadily losing global market share to rival Hewlett-Packard.
Garriques' hiring follows closely the appointment of Michael R. Cannon as president of global operations. Cannon, who was chief executive of Solectron before joining Dell, starts work Feb. 26. He also will report directly to the company's CEO.
At Motorola, Garriques was responsible for its largest unit, which contributed more than $28 billion in revenue last year. The company, however, reported a disappointing fourth quarter because of weakness in its handset business. Motorola has yet to find a replacement for the Razr phone that drove sales for several years.
Motorola, based in Schaumburg, Ill., said Garriques's duties would be taken over by Ray Roman, senior VP of global sales, and Terry Vega, senior VP of global devices. The two executives would act as interim co-heads of the handset business.
