PeopleSoft Inc. is making a bigger push into the business-training market, buying Teamscape Corp., a private maker of learning-management systems. The value of the deal wasn't released at deadline, but it's already completed. PeopleSoft is retaining Teamscape's 15 employees.

PeopleSoft now is going after competitors such as Docent Inc. and Saba Software Inc., with whom it had previously shared some clients. "We used to co-exist on accounts," says Doug Merritt, PeopleSoft VP. "Now we're competitors."

Teamscape software will be integrated with PeopleSoft apps and sold as one of its enterprise-learning products starting in December or early January. PeopleSoft plans to further fill out its E-learning portfolio by partnering later this year with E-learning content, delivery, and management vendors. Merritt says PeopleSoft wants to focus on developing its new learning-management software and automating complex business processes rather than creating courses.
