New E-Learning Tools Hit The Street

Sun and Yahoo are both rolling out E-learning products and services.

Sun Microsystems and Yahoo Broadcast Services, the business communication division of Yahoo Inc., were two of the many major technology names that launched E-learning products and services Tuesday at the Online Learning conference in Los Angeles.

Sun rolled out a new version of its learning-management system, Sun LearnTone, a Web-based platform that tracks and manages employee training. LearnTone technologies originate from assets acquired through the June purchase of learning-management system supplier Isopia Inc. Sun additionally revealed enhanced E-learning consulting services and expanded course offerings for its Sun Web Learning Center, a library of online training courses on Sun products.

Ellen Julian, an International Data Corp. E-learning analyst, says Sun has a competitive advantage moving into the market because of its history of financial stability, strong technological background, and scope of training offerings. In light of the economy, customers are looking for systems from stable companies, she says. "Buyers are not looking for one way for companies to help them with corporate training. Suppliers need to bring a total solution."

Not to miss a potential lucrative market, Yahoo offers its own learning-management system, dubbed Training Management Studio, which manages course creation, user identity and access, and verification of training and comprehension. The Web-based software offers special tools for sales-force and new-hire training, as well as new product introductions. This follows last week's launch of two Web conferencing tools, Virtual Conference and Executive Communications Center.
