Lockheed will manage, operate, and secure the Pentagon's data networks and provide 24 by 7 support to users. According the Army's IT Agency, the Pentagon's network infrastructure includes more than 16,000 miles of wiring and cable.
In March, the Army awarded a six-month extension to bridge the earlier contract with the new one. The new contract runs for one year and includes two one-year options, so it could run through 2014.
Known more for its aerospace arm, Lockheed is one of the Department of Defense's largest IT contractors.
