Opera Software, Freescale Semiconductor, and NEC on Tuesday announced a collaborative technology that creates a better browsing experience for people accessing Web sites containing multimedia content on mobile devices.

Opera is a provider of Web technologies for mobile devices, including the Opera Mini Web browser that's optimized to work on almost all cell phones and smartphones. Freescale specializes in mobile, wireless, and networking semiconductors. NEC provides a range of IT products and services, including networking, electronics, and chips.

The companies' collaborative technology will be showcased at Freescale's Technology Forum in Paris. It will include the Opera 9 Software Development Kit for Devices, running on Freescale's i.MX31 multimedia applications processor and using an Adobe Flash Lite 3 plug-in ported and integrated by NEC.

Cell phone and smartphone users currently have limited access to multimedia-rich Web sites due to the lack of feature integration and multimedia performance on mobile devices, the companies said.

The new technology, with its improved mobile processing and multimedia capabilities, will make it possible to view content like YouTube directly on mobile browsers.
