Yahoo Redesigns Shopping Site For Holidays

The new version is designed to attract shoppers by making it easier for them to find bargains.

In preparation for the holiday season, Yahoo on Friday launched a redesigned shopping site that looks to attract consumers by making it easy for them to find bargains.

The Sunnyvale, Calif., portal added a Bargain Center that aggregates sales, coupons, free shipping offers and rebates from across the Web. It also provides tools for product comparisons.

The opening page for the center highlights popular categories, such as clothing, computers, consumer electronics, home and garden, sports and toys. Drilling down deeper can get a list of all the bargains on the site.

Yahoo's decision to add a single location for good deals was based on its own studies that showed 60 percent of shoppers on its site consider themselves bargain hunters. In trying to meet the demand, the portal is offering to save shoppers the hassle of visiting multiple stores or Web sites.

Yahoo and other shopping sites are gearing up for what's expected to be a good holiday shopping season on the Web. Online retail sales between Thanksgiving and Christmas are expected to reach $32 billion, which is 18 percent higher than last year, according to JupiterResearch. In addition, a record 114 million people are expected to shop by mouse this year to avoid the long line and crowds at the mall. That number reflects a 6 percent increase over last year.
