The NFL has struck a deal with NBC to provide Sunday Night Football on the Web, beginning in September. The deal, announced Monday, marks the first time that the NFL has made entire games available to all on the Internet. Online features will include additional camera angles, in-game highlights, picture-in-picture technology, live statistics, and other interactive elements.
Sunday Night Football Extra will begin with NFL Kickoff 2008 on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. EDT, when the Washington Redskins play the New York Giants, as NFL.com and NBCSports.com feature audio play-by-play, analysis, and sideline reports. It also will include in-game studio updates from NBC Football Night in America and the NFL Network.
"In the first two seasons of NBC Sunday Night Football, we created a new destination to reach viewers and changed traditional prime-time football viewing habits," Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports & Olympics, said in the announcement. "Now, together with the NFL, we are adding the live streaming element where users can interact with the broadcast to enhance their experience."
The arrangement is part of a one-year experiment that will allow the NFL to gauge which features are most popular, particularly among younger viewers who search for most of their entertainment online.
The Super Bowl and games offered through other NFL partners, like Fox, CBS, and DirecTV, are excluded from the deal.
