AOL has rebuilt the site, based on Truveo video search technology that AOL acquired in 2006. The new site launched Thursday.
"Over the past year, there has been an explosion in the amount of professionally produced video that's available on the Web," Timothy Tuttle, CEO and co-founder of Truveo and senior VP of AOL Video, said in a prepared statement. "While today's popular video sharing sites offer a wide variety of user-generated video, they rarely give users the opportunity to find professional, mainstream video. The new Truveo.com solves this problem, so whether it's a dog riding a skateboard or the latest episode of The Daily Show, Truveo.com is the one-stop site for finding videos from across the Web."
Users can also browse video by category -- like news, sports, music and movies. Results will produce both free video and clips for sale. The site features most popular videos on the Web. Users can also find popular TV shows, video sites, or channels, and favorite videos selected by other users.
AOL said that Truveo.com was designed specifically to enable users to find and watch video in a way that respects copyright while also appealing to users. The site directs users to content owners' original Web sites to view many videos from leading media brands.
"This approach ensures that videos found on Truveo can be viewed in the highest quality with the experience intended by the original content owner," the company explained in a prepared statement.
Truveo.com allows users to save and share links, receive recommendations based on their personal preferences, and receive custom video searches through RSS and personalized Web pages. They can also access open APIs to create video mashups. Finally, users can submit their own video through RSS feeds.
Truveo powers video search on AOL Video, AOL Search, Microsoft, Infospace and hundreds of other sites.
