Internet discussions and videos about the killing of Alexandros Grigoropoulos in Athens have drawn thousands of viewers and included discussions urging more demonstrations. One of 28 Facebook pages in Grigoropoulos' name attracted more than 32,000 members in about three days.
Nearly 120,000 people had viewed a YouTube video tribute to Grigoropoulos by Friday afternoon. It was posted Dec. 7.
More than 2,000 comments poured in from around the world, in countless languages, to the tribute, which contains photos, written words and Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" in the background. The images show several pictures of Grigoropoulos. In many, he looks straight into the camera, with a mop of wavy dark hair and a slight frame. Media reports have described him as 15 and 16.
Comments pledge for support from around the world. One urges viewers not to mourn but to see the Grigoropoulos as "the wind of freedom."
That cry seems to be resonating in youth throughout Europe, many of whom have found it difficult or impossible to find decent paying jobs despite having obtained college degrees. Those who are protesting are organizing through text messages, Twitter updates, and social networking sites.
