The 11n technology has rolled out in a haphazard way after the first deliveries began two years ago, with the latest burst of activity coming after the Wi-Fi Alliance updated its certification program last month. Motorola unveiled its dual-radio AP650 802.11n access point and its RFS4000 802.11n integrated services controller Monday.
Meru Networks delivered what is believed to be the first 802.11n for a large-scale application -- at Morrisville State College in New York -- two years ago, but in recent weeks and months a host of providers has launched a variety of 802.11n products. ABI Research said recently that 11n products are flooding the market at a rate that will put shipments nearly equal to those of 802.11g by the end of the year.
Through its product testing program, the Wi-Fi Alliance has certified that 11n products will meet the latest standards and be backward-compatible as well. "Given the wide array of 802.11n devices now emerging, and their varying capabilities, the launch of an updated Wi-Fi certification program is an important next step for the industry," said Victoria Fodale, In-Stat senior analyst, in a statement.
The flood of 11n products ranges from devices with outdoor capabilities from firms such as Meraki Networks and Trapeze Networks to devices from companies such as Cisco and Broadcom designed to push the power of 11n into businesses.
