The companies announced Monday that the new LCD and plasma broadband television sets would deliver Netflix movies, television shows, and other high-definition content available through Internet connections. The television sets will be embedded with Netflix streaming software, so no external device is necessary to pull from Netflix's online library.
The television sets are on display this week during this week's consumer electronics show, 2009 CES, in Las Vegas. They instantly stream content from a broadband connection and a queue-based user interface. Members who own the devices can use the Netflix Web site to add movies and TV shows to their own queues. The television sets will display the choices and remote controls will allow users to read summaries, rate content, watch movies and shows within 30 seconds of choosing them, and fast-forward or rewind.
"LG Electronics was first to embrace Netflix as a streaming partner a year ago, and was first in 2008 to introduce a Blu-ray disc player that streams movies from Netflix," Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said in a prepared statement. "So it's fitting that LG is the first to introduce Netflix instant streaming directly to the TV with these next-generation HDTVs."
The companies also plan to release five new models of Blu-ray disc players and home theater systems planned this year.
Netflix members owning the devices pay monthly subscriptions, beginning at $8.99, for unlimited streaming and DVDs.
