According to the new report, titled "BlackBerry Blows Past 10% Share in North America in Q2 2008," this represents a 5% increase in shipments from the previous quarter, which also saw 39.8 million units sold.
While RIM's bread and butter has been enterprise customers, the company has increasingly grabbed a larger share of the consumer market with a line of "prosumer" handsets like the BlackBerry Curve and BlackBerry Pearl.
Motorola stayed in first place by shipping 10.8 million phones, and it held more than a quarter of the market, the report said. But both numbers declined from the first quarter, and the company recently brought in a new CEO to lead its ailing handset division.
LG Electronics was in the second slot with 8.8 million handsets shipped and 21% of the market. Thanks to the success of devices like the LG Voyager, the company posted record profits in the second quarter.
Samsung shipped 7.8 million units and nabbed about 19% of the market for the third spot. It was followed by RIM and Nokia for fourth and fifth place.
While the report did not single out Apple for its iPhone, it did find "Others" shipped 6.1 million units for more than 14% of the market. Exact sales figures for the iPhone 3G haven't been released, but Apple did say its second-generation smartphone sold 1 million units during its debut weekend.
