Amazon App Hits BlackBerry

The app lets BlackBerry users browse and buy products on the go, and it lets users take pictures of real-life objects to add to their Amazon wish lists.

Amazon.com wants to make it easier for customers to buy products on the go, and it has released a shopping application for BlackBerry smartphones.

The Amazon App for BlackBerry enables mobile users to view the online retailer's site in an optimized format for the handset. Users can browse and purchase products with one click, view customer review, track packages, and access their wish list.

With the Amazon Remembers feature, the app also will also let customers use the BlackBerry's camera to shop. As with Amazon's iPhone app, BlackBerry users can snap a picture of a product, upload it, and the app will try to match the picture with a product in Amazon's inventory. When users receive the results, they have the option of purchasing it immediately, or adding it to their wish lists

"In addition to their favorite Amazon shopping features, BlackBerry users can now access the Amazon Remembers feature for a fun and easy way to build a list of photographs showing products they want to remember for later, make price comparisons across multiple merchants, and purchase," said Sam Hall, director of Amazon Mobile, in a statement.

The app is available for free from Amazon's Web site, and it will work with any BlackBerry that has a trackball, such as the BlackBerry Bold or Curve 8900. The app is not currently compatible with the touch-screen Storm.

This is just the latest attempt by Amazon to expand its presence to the mobile space, as it also introduced a way for mobile users to buy products by text message last year. Dubbed "TextBuyIt," the service lets customers with Amazon accounts send an SMS to the online retailer, reply to the response to confirm the order, and the product will be on its way.
