Kodak Rethinks Printers

Eastman Kodak is turning the age-old approach to printer sales on its head. Instead of cutting prices on its new ink-jets and then jacking up ink prices, it's going with inexpensive ink: $10 black cartridges and $15 color ones.

Kodak's EasyShare AiO line puts it on a collision course with market leader Hewlett-Packard. It may be a meandering route, since Kodak is struggling with change. Last week, the company said it would let 3,000 people go on top of the 27,000 previously announced layoffs.

Kodak's printers produce quality color photos, text, and graphics, and have print, scan, and copy capabilities. And they're not that expensive: The 5100 sells for $150, the 5300 for $200, and the 5500 for $300.
