U.S. PC Market Expanding

Among the other top-five vendors globally, Acer continued its rapid expansion in the Americas, while posting strong gains in other regions as well. The No. 4 vendor increased shipments by 55.4% to capture 7.2% of the market. Despite the strong performance, Acer fell to fourth in the quarter after tying for third with Lenovo in the first quarter.

Third-place finisher Lenovo held on with a very solid quarter, increasing shipments by 22.3% for an 8.3% share of the total market. Toshiba was No. 5 with a 4.1% share that followed a boost in shipments of 21.5%.

In the United States, the overall PC market increased by 7.2%, mostly because of strong notebook sales. Dell led the U.S. market with a 28.4% share, followed by HP, 23.6%. Toshiba was No. 4 with 5.3% and Acer No. 5 with 5.2%.

IDC released its numbers a day after rival Gartner. Gartner pegged worldwide PC shipments at 61.1 million units, an increase of 11.7% over the same period a year ago. Apple, however, did not make the top-five vendors in the United States in Gartner's standings. Researchers' findings often differ because of methodology.
