Dell on Thursday introduced two Latitude notebooks for business that are the computer maker's most secure portable PCs.

The D630 and D830 include Seagate's Momentus full disk encryption hard drive, which is available in capacities up to 160 Gbytes. In addition, the portables ship with Wave Systems' Embassy Trust Suite. The software's remote administration server enables IT staff to document that all data on a lost notebook was encrypted by the hard drive.

Both notebooks are powered by Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 processors, which have a clock speed of 2.4 GHz, and a 4Mbyte L2 cache. The D830, however, is available with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M, a higher performing graphics processor than the Nvidia Quadro NVS 135M in the D630. The NVS 140M is designed for graphically demanding applications, such as 3D modeling and video editing.

Both notebooks, which sport 15.4-inch displays, include Intel's Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 core, which is built into the chipset on the motherboard. The computers support up to 4Gbytes of memory.

Pricing for the D830 and the D630 starts at $849. The machines are available with Windows Vista or Windows XP.

Dell this month upgraded its Precision mobile workstation with Intel's latest Centrino platform, an optional solid-state drive, and an Nvidia Quadro chip.

The Precision M6300 targets engineers, digital content creators, developers and other professionals. At 8.5 pounds, the notebook is meant as a desktop replacement. The system is available with 32- or 64-bit Windows Vista Ultimate or Business, or XP Professional SP2. Dell plans to also offer Red Hat Linux 5.1 in November. Pricing for the Precision M6300 starts at $2,070.
