WorldCom's troubles continue to grow. The government last week filed additional charges against the company, alleging civil fraud in connection with public offerings of securities during the time of the communications service provider's accounting violations. The Securities and Exchange Commission added allegations that WorldCom violated federal laws regarding internal financial controls and record keeping. The carrier, which filed for bankruptcy in July, also raised its estimate of inflated earnings to more than $9 billion. WorldCom says the restatements "have no impact on its ability to continue to provide service."
