Some applications had new security features offered through Intel's new processor ID numbers, which let IS managers identify PCs remotely. For example, SmithMicro Software's HotFaxShare application uses the new chip to identify the parties on both ends before sending an Internet fax.
Many graphics and Internet applications took on a more polished look at the Intel showing. "You're able to have much higher resolution and much more detail on the Pentium III," said Intel VP Mike Aymar. Speech recognition should improve significantly with the new chip, according to Aymar. The "training period" to teach a speech application the sound of one's voice should drop from 30 minutes to about three minutes, he said. Intel says its Pentium III launch on Feb. 26 will be its biggest product introduction ever. Present at the San Jose event were 200 vendors and 250 journalists and analysts. Intel expects to spend $300 million on its Pentium III advertising and marketing campaign.
