To handle the additional complexity, PC Connection developed and implemented customized EDI protocols. That's because some software and service vendors do not support traditional EDI transactions if no physical product ships.
PC Connection's IT upgrades aren't limited to the enhanced fulfillment system. The company also is implementing a new freight engine that will allow it to formulate competitive shipping charges, depending on local market conditions. Previously, PC Connection charged a flat shipping rate for each service offered, regardless of destination. The company hopes these supply chain enhancements will pay dividends in customer satisfaction.

PC Connection's enhanced JD Edwards environment also enables it to deal in more complex products as it looks to move into higher-margin categories, such as software licenses. For instance, PC Connection is now a reseller of Microsoft's Open, Select, and Enterprise Agreement software licenses for enterprises. That requires a system that can handle a complex chain of interactions among the customer, the original software manufacturer, and the reseller.
