OpenOffice.org updated its open-source suite Tuesday to 2.01, two months after the long-awaited 2.0 versions released.

The 2.01 suite, which includes a word processor, spreadsheet, database, and presentation manager, fixes a slew of bugs, offers additional customizing options, and is available in several new languages, ranging from Xhosa and Vietnamese to Polish and Macedonian.

Administrators can now disable or hide application settings to limit functionality for specific users, the bulleting and number feature has been enhanced, and the suite now features a mail merge tool for backend systems.

OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 can be downloaded in versions for Windows, Linux, and Solaris. A native Mac OS X edition is still being ported.

The suite has garnered attention as some governments argue that documents must be based on open formats, not proprietary file formats such as those used by Microsoft's Office, the bundle that has a monopoly on the office application market. OpenOffice.org 2.0 was the first productivity suite to adopt the OpenDocument format.

Massachusetts in particular had been a vigorous proponent of OpenOffice.org and OpenDocument, but it recently reversed course and threw its support behind Microsoft, saying that the Redmond, Wash.-based developer's Office Open XML "will meet our new standards for acceptable open formats."
