Here are some things to consider when drafting your criminal-activity policy:
- Create a team of legal, human-resource, and public-relations experts.
- Evaluate technologies that block the downloading of images to your system.
- Make sure your existing Internet-use policy is up to date.
- If you don't have an Internet-use policy, get one!
- Make sure everyone knows where to report any criminal activity.
- Line up cybercrime and security consultants in advance.
- Create a relationship with local law-enforcement agencies.
- Create a crisis team to handle serious events that impact the company's reputation.
- Remind employees about the policy regularly.
- Maintain all logs from the suspected employee's computer.
- Make sure your IT department knows about your policies and what to do and what not to do if child pornography is suspected.
- Enforce your policies and procedures. If they aren't working, change them, don't ignore them.
- If you find child pornography on your system, do a sweep of your backup systems as well.
