In one of the largest telecom acquisitions of the past decade, uber-carrier AT&T has agreed to acquire T-Mobile for $39 billion, a move that would lift AT&T past Verizon as the largest U.S. mobile communications operator -- should the deal pass regulatory muster. The industry buzz had Sprint gunning for T-Mobile, but the AT&T deal makes more sense from a technology perspective: They use the same basic GSM technology for their mobile networks and handsets. The acquisition gives AT&T more capabilities in 4G, and it should help AT&T accelerate its Long Term Evolution network build-out over the next several years.
