1. Editor's Note: NY Auto Show: Tech In Driver's Seat

If you love cars and you love technology, there may be no better place in the world than the New York Auto Show, which kicks off this weekend.

Alex Wolfe got an early glimpse of this year's car fest, showcasing cutting-edge technology: hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles, and 21st century twists on the muscle car, including Ford's venerable Mustang. The well-documented struggles of American names including Ford suggest they need innovation in these areas to reposition themselves for long-term viability. Trouble is, they remain behind the big Japanese manufacturers in the race to deliver alternative vehicles in production volumes; that's not a small consideration given our once-again soaring fuel prices.

In addition to a report on the show, Wolfe delivers some great photography to give you an early look into the future.

Speaking of photos, there was strong response to last week's call for reader photos. I'll publish what I think are the best next week, and ask you to pick a winner. Meantime, check out this Science Daily view of a spiral galaxy with fields in which new stars are being formed.
