Bought a new computer lately? My colleague Mitch Wagner and I have both done just that. Mitch made the leap from PC to Mac, while I—under a time crunch because of the "expiration" of my existing notebook—bought an XP-loaded, Vista-capable PC in the days leading up to the late-January Vista launch.
Mitch details his startup process and first few days of use in this blog entry. One of his key conclusions: Getting up and running with the Mac is much easier than with a PC, but the Mac hasn't been quite as reliable as the pro-Apple hype suggests. His system has been prone to crashes during initial use.
My experience with the new HP Pavilion dv6000 (AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology, 2 Gbytes of RAM, and a 120-Gbyte hard drive) has been mostly positive. But the many decisions to be made around the transition are anything but painless. In the days leading up to the Vista launch, the retail PC cupboards were bare, the major vendors' Web sites were baffling at best, and whatever system I purchased was bound to induce lingering doubts about its Vista readiness.
It's likely I overbought (at least versus what I wanted to spend) just so I could one day run Vista—even though I'm not sure I want to, given the various software incompatibilities already being reported. The migration 'path' that's been laid out requires that I do most of the work.

It appears that PC vendors are nearly as confused as consumers when it comes to determining what is a Vista PC. Here's the lowdown on what's out there and what you really need when looking for hardware.
Even cross-platform programs such as QuickTime are crashing intermittently, the Macintosh maker says.
New inexpensive rollouts and tests of high-speed wireless services indicate that VoIP on cell phones is coming, but VoIP pacesetter Skype says the price still is too high.
The performance is on par with Intel's Xeon 5100 series dual-core processors but uses fewer watts.
Although companies continue to spend more on security, they don't necessarily feel more secure.
Mundie's biggest challenge will be making security more intuitive and easier to implement. One of his goals is to create more of a drag-and-drop interface around security.
The president of England's ARM Holdings said that "at least three" processor cores developed at his company are inside Apple's iPhone, though Apple isn't confirming anything.
The suit claims the Defense Department violated the Freedom of Information Act by failing to expedite EFF's request for information and for withholding agency records.
By Wednesday afternoon, there were no products of any kind offered for sale on eBay by ChicagoComputerBroker, though his "power seller" account appeared to be active.
Unbox users will soon be able to rent and purchase movies and television shows for less than Wal-Mart's recently launched service.

4. The Latest Mobile Blog Posts From Over The Air
A group of international carriers including Vodafone, France Telecom, Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom, Hutchison Whampoa, Telecom Italia, and U.S. wireless carrier Cingular Wireless this weekend said they would work together to develop a mobile search engine they hope will keep Google and Yahoo from dominating the emerging mobile search market. That's all great, but does anyone actually use search on cell phones?
OK, you spent tons of money and hundreds of hours equipping your workforce with mobile e-mail. Now they're always on and you can squeeze more hours of productivity from them. Everyone is happy, right? Until the mobile e-mail system goes down.
Let's face it, we don't all have mega expense accounts to which we can charge Wi-Fi access, especially with it costing as much as $20 a day in hotels and airports, among other places. That doesn't leave a lot of options for road warriors on a budget. But what about free Wi-Fi? Here are some pointers to lead the way to wireless bliss.
