FROM THE EDITOR: Know How Close You Can Get
Editor's Note
Chris Murphy

Two real-world examples: Partners Healthcare is testing an online avatar that coaches patients, urging them to exercise, take their pills, or lay off the fries. JPMorgan Chase offers online software to help people budget, treating everyday groceries differently than a flat-screen TV.

Made up example: A bank offers an avatar to nag you about spending habits, using a rules engine to question whether you can afford an $1,800 Best Buy binge with a mortgage payment looming in three weeks.

Over the line? Where does customer engagement end and creepy begin? Our cover story this week explores where companies are testing the boundaries, and where they're wary of doing so. To do this, we look to innovators in three industries that every one of us uses: healthcare, banking, and government.

Healthcare's particularly ripe for this experiment. Since most of us have had so little interaction with healthcare data online, no one's all that sure where the limits are. The banking industry is the opposite -- despite years of close relationships online, even innovators tend to play it extremely safe when adding new Web services.

We already do a lot of our business online, and the mobile Web will make today's interactions look positively primitive. There's never been more at stake for knowing where the line between closeness and creepy lies with your customers.
