Nimsoft Offers Service-Level Monitoring Of VMware Stack

Besides monitoring server performance, NimBUS also can analyze business application performance from the user perspective.

Nimsoft on Monday introduced for VMware virtualization environments monitoring software that analyzes server and application performance and compares results with service levels established by an IT department.

NimBUS for VMware uses 80 health checkpoints in analyzing VMware Infrastructure 3, the latest version of the virtual infrastructure software suite. The monitoring capabilities include resource allocation and performance of disk, memory, CPU, system data and virtual network I/O.

Besides monitoring server performance, NimBUS also can analyze business application performance from the user perspective, Ken Vanderweel, marketing director at Nimsoft said. For example, response times could be analyzed for a Microsoft Exchange email server.

NimBUS includes tools for IT departments to set service levels, and trigger notifications if the levels are in danger of not being met. The new product also delivers reporting on all monitored resources.

Specifically, predictive and trending reports are available for the performance of the underlying physical server hardware, and the VMware ESX hosts, virtual machines and VMware resources. In addition, reporting is available on virtual machine hosted operating systems, including Windows, Linux, Unix, and Netware; VM hosted business applications, and application transaction response times.

Managed service providers often use Nimsoft technology to monitor the health of clients' systems. VMware this month expanded its offering by tapping the software as a service model. The new product offered hosted service providers a way to license its VMware Infrastructure Suite as a monthly subscription based on the number of virtual machines that are running.

Virtualization through the use of multiple virtual machines is used in computer servers to fully utilize the machine's processing power. Virtual machines can be used to run a variety of operating systems and applications on the same host, and they can isolate different workloads. The technology, however, can introduce security risks.

Nimsoft's NimBUS is available as of this week. Pricing starts at $750 per virtual machine.
