The 905i and 705i series handsets can be used with NTT DoCoMo's Music & Video Channel service and for intuitive motion, voice-activated gaming.
Showcasing the latest innovation in the mobile device space, Japan's wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo on Thursday unveiled 23 new devices as part of its 905i and 705i series.
Ten new mobile devices in the 905i series are designed to perform various advanced functions, such as international roaming through built-in 3G/GSM, high-speed data access via HSDPA-based networks, mobile TV, GPS-based location services, combined capabilities of two phones in one device, and support for credit card and credit payment services.
Devices in the series are highly geared toward multimedia. They can be used with NTT DoCoMo's Music & Video Channel service and for intuitive motion, voice-activated gaming. The devices come with interactive maps and a tool for customizing screen layouts, calendars, and other phone content, as well as optional extra-large text for easy viewing.
The 905i series devices are not all fun and games. They have been designed to work with a new service called "Area mail" for disaster information. The free mail service transmits evacuation instructions from various government sources to people in disaster-affected areas.
The 705i series includes 13 new mobile devices that are slim and fashionable, but are also packed with many features. NTT DoCoMo is offering ultra-slim clamshell models, waterproof models, and models that provide ultrahigh-speed data communication of up to 7.2 Mbps.
All 23 models will become available starting this year and next year in a total of 75 colors. Pricing information hasn't been released yet. For a complete list of the devices and a launch schedule, visit NTT DoCoMo's Web site.

While these devices are intended for wireless subscribers in Japan, they're a timely example of the innovation currently taking place. Mobile users want choice whether it's the right design they're seeking, form factor, data access, or multimedia capabilities. With over 20 models, NTT DoCoMo is allowing its subscribers to make that choice. The same applies in the U.S., where carriers can learn a lesson or two from providers overseas.
