Oracle is taking another step to make itself an easier vendor for customers to work with. The company said Wednesday that it's putting the finishing touches on a comprehensive online document called the Software Investment Guide that spells out pricing and licensing options for all Oracle products and services.
In recent months, Oracle has been trying to shake its reputation as a difficult company to do business with. Those efforts follow several customer-relationship missteps in the last few years. Last year, Oracle dropped the unpopular power-unit pricing for database and application servers that some customers said greatly increased their licensing fees. Earlier this year, the vendor had a well-publicized tangle with customers over license fees paid for Oracle software used in batched, multiplex systems.
The Software Investment Guide isn't a direct result of that last controversy, says Jacqueline Woods, Oracle's VP of global pricing and licensing strategy; the document was in the works before then. Customers today are more concerned about buying software under the most cost-effective terms, she says, and the guide is designed to make that easier.
The PDF document, more than 40 pages long, Woods says, will be available starting Sept. 3. Customers will have access from the "resources" section of Oracle's Web site.
