Within just hours of Steve Jobs' announcement of iCloud at WWDC in San Francisco, a new "iCloud-ready" gadget debuted. The Looxcie 2, a wearable Bluetooth video headset, lets you share videos via iCloud, as well as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. You control it directly via a free Android or iOS app, which also allows a choice between 320p or 480p video quality. This follow-up to the first Looxcie cam weighs about 20 percent less than the original and looks to be about half the size of the original.

The first Looxcie was introduced last year and also seen at January's Consumer Electronics Show. In InformationWeek's review, Fritz Nelson found it "…well suited for longer events where a tripod is inconvenient or holding a camera gets tiring, or worse, prevents you from actually witnessing the event."

While the video results of the first Looxcie could be a little disappointing and the wearable design was awkward, some related decision factors have changed in the past year. First, Cisco shuttered development on the Flip camera, the central competition for this sort of device. Second, the Looxcie 2 development team learned from the past, improving design and video specs.

The updated Looxcie 2 provides more options for capturing a first-person perspective with new attachment accessories that make the gadget easier to wear over the ear, with a helmet or a cap. It comes in two versions--10 hours of video storage for $199 or 5 hours for $179. One limit to note: when the camera hits its storage limits, it begins recording over previously recorded material, so it's necessary that you schedule in regular cloud data dumps. The gadget stores video clips as MP4 files. It also doubles as a Bluetooth headset to take calls.

The company claims the device's lithium polymer battery can manage 4 hours of continuous recording on a single charge.

Looxcie doesn't have much competition to speak of in the over-the-ear video recording market, and with the demise of Flip, the mini-recorder field is also less crowded. The wearable pocket cam, the uCorder, is probably the closed thing to a competitor, but Looxcie's flexibility gives it an edge.

Innovative IT shops are turning the mobile device management challenge into a business opportunity--and showing that we can help people be more connected and collaborative, regardless of location. Read the new report from InformationWeek Analytics. Download it now. (Free registration required.)
